Download SafeZone and set up your profile for emergencies 👤

If you haven't already, download SafeZone, the University's safety app. It can help you quickly contact Protective Services in a medical or personal emergency and provides useful safety tools while you're on campus.

You can also add support information to your SafeZone profile. From communication requirements and mobility or evacuation assistance needs to emergency contacts – this way, if you need assistance during an emergency evacuation, we'll know how to help.

Did you know that being a USYD student gives you access to a range of free apps, software and subscriptions? From Canva Campus to free access to publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian, there are plenty of tools available to support your studies and student life.

Take a few minutes to explore what's included and make sure you're getting the most out of your student account.

Collect your physical ID at the Student Centre (if you still haven't already done so) 🪪

Overwhelmed by the crowds earlier in semester? We get it. But if you haven’t collected your physical student ID yet, now’s a great time to swing by the Student Centre (Level 3, Jane Foss Russell Building) to pick it up. Your digital ID is great for gaining access to things like our buildings and library services, but you'll need a physical student ID card for your exams, so don't leave it too late!

Pick up your next read at the Great Hall Book Fair 📕

The Great Hall Book Fair is officially in full swing with a treasure trove of books for you to unearth. The fair runs until this Wednesday 16 September, so there’s still time to drop by and discover your next favourite read – no registration needed.

The Student Experience Survey (SES) – a nationwide survey of higher education students – launched last week. Coursework students will have received an invitation to complete the survey from the Social Research Centre (ses@srcentre.com.au).

The SES is your opportunity to tell us what it's like to be a University of Sydney student. Your feedback helps us shape and improve our student experience. It only takes 10–15 minutes to complete, and you'll automatically go in the draw to win one of 50 gift cards valued at $50. 

We've worked with shared e-bike providers to geolock approved parking locations on campus to help keep pathways, building entrances and accessible routes clear. Shared e-bikes can only be parked in approved bike parking locations. Search for 'bike parking' on Campus Maps to find a suitable parking location and find out more via our getting to campus page.

Last week, we asked about your go-to wellbeing boost, and getting outside for a walk and some fresh air was the clear favourite. Now we’d love to hear more. If you're an undergraduate student, take a few minutes to complete the Uni Student Wellbeing Survey. Your insights will help researchers better understand student wellbeing and shape future initiatives. Plus, you'll go into the draw to win 1 of 10 $300 gift cards.

Magpie swooping season is upon us. To stay safe on campus, look out for signage at known swooping areas like outside Fisher Library and in front of the Quad, and keep your eyes peeled for our feathered friends!

Student elections – nominations closed

Nominations for student elections have now closed. Voting will commence from 9 am Monday 12 October 2026.

Students eligible to vote in these elections will receive an automatically generated email from BigPulse (third party preferential voting software) to their student email account.

Beware of scams that impersonate the University

We're aware of a scam targeting our students that impersonates University staff and asks students to pay fees, including University fees and visa fees for exchange programs.

We'll never ask you to share your personal information, including your bank details, via email, text or social media. We'll also never ask you to pay your fees via direct deposit or by clicking a link. The only place where you can pay your fees is Sydney Student.

Scammers may also claim to be government officials or police officers. If you suspect you’re being scammed, stop contact with the scammer immediately, report the scam to ScamWatch, and connect with the Student Wellbeing team for support. Visit our scams webpage for more information on how to avoid being scammed.

Help choose this year's Teacher of the Year

Had a teacher who made a real difference to your postgraduate studies? SUPRA is looking for postgraduate coursework students to join the judging panel for its Teacher of the Year Awards.

This is a chance to recognise outstanding teaching, gain insight into the awards process and help celebrate educators who go above and beyond for students. If you haven't nominated a teacher this year, you may be eligible to apply. Submissions close 11:59 pm Thursday 17 September.

Be aware of bird flu (avian influenza)

The University is monitoring H5 bird flu developments and following government advice. If you notice sick or dead birds, avoid direct contact, record what you see and report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. 🌳 Need an excuse to get outside between classes? Look out for giant games and activities popping up on Cadigal Green and Law Lawns every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during semester from 12–2 pm. Grab a mate, bring your lunch and get involved.

🎥 Looking for a way to spend your evenings? Each Wednesday this semester, Cadigal Green transforms into a free open-air cinema. Grab dinner, pull up a bean bag and settle in from 5:30 pm.

More than 600 students attended this year's Career-Ready Wardrobe, picking up free professional clothing to help them feel confident for interviews, placements and future career opportunities.

Thanks to donations from staff and alumni, students had access to more than 2,300 items of professional clothing, with over 815 kilograms of clothing diverted from landfill. Alongside the wardrobe, you could also access resume checks, styling advice and practical career support.

"The most valuable part of the Career-Ready Wardrobe was being able to access professional clothing that I can use for interviews and future professional opportunities."

Whether you're preparing for interviews, applying for internships or exploring career options, the Careers Centre runs events, workshops and employer sessions throughout the year to help you build confidence and get career-ready.

Join us for the University of Sydney Community Festival on Saturday 7 November, 11 am–4 pm, for a day of ideas, connection and community at the Camperdown campus. Enjoy a day of live entertainment, inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, guided tours and family-friendly activities, plus great food and the chance to explore campus with friends and family. Don't forget to register before Monday 21 September for your chance to win 1 of 5 Barry the Ibis plushies!

Join the Library's First Nations Film Series from 12 pm–1:30 pm this Wednesday 16 September for a screening of Sweet As (2022), an acclaimed coming-of-age drama from First Nations filmmaker Jub Clerc. Set in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the film follows Murra, a young Aboriginal girl who embarks on a life-changing photography retreat – discovering friendship and belonging along the way.

From orchestral concerts and opera to contemporary works and early music, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Greenway Series has something for every music lover this semester (we see you, aspiring cellist!). Performed by Conservatorium students and staff, the program spans classical favourites, Australian compositions and new creative works across venues including Verbrugghen Hall, the Great Hall and the Footbridge Theatre.

Ever wondered what research actually involves, or whether it's something you'd like to pursue after your degree? Research Week (21–25 September) is your chance to explore research opportunities, hear from current researchers and learn how research can help tackle real-world challenges.

Whether you're simply curious or already considering postgraduate study, there are events and sessions to help you discover what's possible.

Whether you're considering a master’s degree, graduate diploma or another postgrad qualification, the Postgraduate Information Session on Thursday 17 September from 10:30 am–12:30 pm is a great chance to explore your options and get your questions answered. You'll also be able to speak directly with staff and find the degree that's right for you.

Join the Pathways to Research for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students session on Wednesday 23 September, 12 pm–3 pm at The Gadigal Centre. Hear from alumni, connect with supervisors and learn more about research pathways over a Ngamuru Lunch.
