Dear students,
I am delighted to announce that after an extensive internationally competitive search, Professor Lucy Marshall has been appointed as our inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Community and Leadership).
This role has been established to lead the University’s strategic direction across our culture, leadership, and diversity, equity and inclusion agendas. Our aspiration to make Sydney a better place to work and a place that works better requires more than changes to our systems – it requires us to create a collegial workplace culture that enables everyone to flourish.
I am confident Lucy’s skills and experiences make her an ideal person to lead this cultural transformation. She is an enthusiastic leader with a track-record of collaborating with academic and professional staff, students, and partners to deliver results.
Lucy embeds the values of excellence, trust, and accountability in how she leads. In her current role as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University, her collective approach to faculty strategy has delivered the highest ratings in student success in any semester.
In accepting her appointment, Lucy said: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a champion of diversity, equity and inclusion and the part they play in creating strong organisational cultures where each of our talented staff and students are set up for success. I believe an institution’s culture underpins success, and I’m excited by the opportunity to shape a new role focused on instilling a high-trust, high-performance culture across the University. Strong cultures are built upwards from the local school and professional service unit level, with the support of effective institutional leadership. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues to create a university where everyone feels they belong and can realise their full potential.”
Lucy has previously been the inaugural Associate Dean (Equity and Diversity), the Associate Dean (Research) and the academic lead for Athena SWAN at the University of New South Wales.
Lucy will join the University in February next year, and I hope you will join me in extending a warm welcome to her.
Best,
Annamarie
